I have a new install of Windows XP professional SP2 on a system with
the following specification

AMD Duron 1,1
30GB Hard Drive
NForce K7420N Pro MSI motherboard
384MB RAM (32MB allocated to graphics)

The system has been checked for viruses and spyware (using spybot and
ad-aware) and is clear. I have performed a chkdsk, defrag, disk
cleanup and a full re-install and still the problem persists.

At all times the system (not system idle) process is running at 95-99%
and although this does not slow the general speed of the machine down
I cannot find a reason for it. However, the major problem is that when
I load windows explorer and type a folder location into the address
bar the folder loads but then explorer hangs. Similarly when I load IE
and key in a URL in the address bar and click GO or hit enter IE hangs
without loading the web page. In both cases it is impossible to shut
down IE or explorer. Navigating through either program with the mouse
does not present any problem.

Windows Media Player 10 also hangs when opening music files from the
File->Open menu. Finally, when creating shortcuts from the browse for
folder dialog, the dialog shows the my documents and my computer
folders but neither can be expanded and the dialog hangs with an hour
glass mouse icon.

Thanks for any help you can give.

I managed to find a solution to this problem.

A non compatible USB connector from the motherboard to the back plate
was confusing windows. It seemed to make Windows think that it was
connected to a network.

Frustrating but glad to get to the bottom of it.
