I recently reinstalled XP on my computer due to some problems I was having.
Now when I go to the taskbar and then to programs, it looks like all my
programs are gone. However, when I go to the C drive and then to programs,
there they are. How to I fix this so that I can access my programs from the
taskbar? Do I need to reinstall all of them? I don't want to try that if I am
going to have duplicates.

Also, since the reinstall, my web pages scroll verrrry slow. Any ideas?

Hi,

What you did was an "over the top" reinstall instead of a repair
installation. This was commonly done in Win9X installations, but in
WinNT(XP) it overwrites the original system with what essentially is a new
installation and installed programs, settings, etc are not preserved. A
repair install would have incorporated the old system settings, including
installed programs. You will need to reinstall the programs (and install
them to the same folders if you are worried about duplicates, they will just
overwrite the existing ones). Next time, instead of new installation, choose
the option to do an in-place upgrade.

Thats what I was afraid of :) Thanks so much for your reply!

I have been trying to access my documents to drag them over to the new
folder, but I get "access is denied." Can do I fix that? Also, I try to
access my second partion (D drive) from the start menu, it won't open. When I
right click it, "auto play" is there instead of "open." I can open it though
if I go to my computer first. How do I correct this?

Hi,

The first problem is another aftereffect of the reinstall. The folders
"belong" to the other installation, and the security descriptors don't
match. Please see this link on "taking ownership" of a folder:
http://rickrogers.org/fixes.htm#Taking_ownership

The second is probably because there is an autorun.inf file on the root of
D:\. Locate and delete it.
