I just bought a new computer yesterday and I'm already having problems.
Every time I try to add or delete a program XP dies on me. I'll try to reboot
my computer and it looks like it's to finish rebooting and then the screen
goes blank exception for the photo in the background. Another words all the
icons and the toolbar on the bottom do a vanishing act. So far the only way
I've been able to get it to recover is to do a system recovery and the
reinstall my DSL software. By the way the DSL software doesn't seem to affect
anything. I've had to do a system recovery at least six time in the past day
and it's getting really old. Anybody got any idea what going on here. BTW
I've got an emachines T5026 if that helps.

Do you have updated AntiVirus software and firewall active. Sounds like your
system is repeatedly being infested by malware. Try the following the next
time you perform a system restore:

1. After the system restore, before installing the DSL software, check for
properly updated antivirus software. Most new systems come with Antivirus
that includes free updates for at least 30 days before you need to pay. If
you're not getting updates, either buy the upgrade or purchase another
antivirus product. Or you can try the free AVG Antivirus from www.grisoft.com.

2. Make sure that you have SP2 applied to Windows XP and the Windows
firewall is on. Right-click "MY Computer" and select properties and you
should see Service Pack 2 under the System: section. If you don't have it,
get a copy on CD from somewhere and install it. You can order a CD from
Microsoft or you might be able to get one from eMachines.

3. Once you have updated virus scanning and firewall enabled, then install
your DSL. As soon as you get connected, download AdAware Personal from
www.lavasoftusa.com and Spybot Search & Destroy from
www.safer-networking.org. Install both and run frequent scans of your system
to remove any malware. I also recommend using the resident portion of SpyBot
as it will prevent many types of malware from getting to you in the first
place.
