enlarging icons

hello anyone,
I had just finished installing windows xp professional,
and everything ran perfect, then I accidentally hit the
surge protecter and the pc turned off. upon turning it
back on, the image shrunk.
How do i get everything back to normal size. Please
explain step by step, I'm a rookie.
