Does anybody know of a good utility (preferably no-cost :-) that will perform
the same checks and fixes as Norton WinDoctor?

Thanks,
Chuck

Already built into XP. It's called chkdsk. Open a cmd.exe prompt and
type: chkdsk /?

That will give you a list of parameters for chkdsk. By the way,
Norton WinDr. is crapware, do not use it.

Really? I was under the impression that chkdsk was the XP equivalent of Disk
Doctor. I never really had a problem with WinDoctor until Norton as a whole
decieded to freak out on me, hence my migration elsewhere.
