JB -

The same thing happens to me, and has happened since Day 1!
The funny thing is, these work for the few 4 times, immediately after
booting or logging in as a new user (or re-logging in).

I thought there might be some relationship to Norton Personal Firewall
or Lotus Notes... Are you running either of these?

Please reply! You're the only other person in the world who I've
found to also see this problem!

Here are the problems:

1. Start/Run, Start/Search and Start/Help and Support
have stopped responding to being selected - after
selection nothing happens. Other menu items respond as
normal;

2. Right-click on a file or folder and select properties -
nothing happens. Do the same for a drive and it responds
as normal;

3. Although I can see inside the drives/folders of
another non-Service Pack 1 XP computer on the network
that computers cannot open the drives/folders on my SP1
computer. Trying to do so either results in the non-SP1
computer crashing (freezes and then terminating the app
takes Explorer out totally leaving nothing but the
wallpaper on screen) or the app (Explorer) has to be
terminated but the O/S continues running.

4. A third machine on the network also has the same
problem mentioned above (in 3). This machine has SP1
installed on it and has also started behaving very
weirdly. Internet access (through a hub on my SP1
machine) is erratic with some web sites opening, some
not. Update cannot be reached neither does Windows
Messenger sign in. As in problem 3 this machine cannot
access the other (main) SP1 machine although the main
machine can see and access files and folders on the
second SP1 machine.

I have also lost the Restore Points on my cmputer so I
cannot roll back. A repair install of XP only seemed to
make the problems worse.

I really want to avoid a fresh install if at all possible
so any help that could be offered would be appreciated.

A little more research results.

Someone told me before "Oh, it must be a registry setting." That
doesn't explain why it works SOMETIMES, and usually right after
logging in, and then stops. To me, I'm thinking something I'm running
has a memory leak.

It works for several times (I just did Start->Run, cmd a dozen times!)
after logging out and logging in again. The only programs I have
running right after bootup are:

Norton Personal Firewall and Symantec Antivirus Corporate ed.
SetiAtHome
XPlanet (winxplanetbg)
YahooIM
FreePDF Assistant
IE 6.0.28
BTTray.exe
audevicemgr.exe (SonyEricsson P800 sync tool)
And the several cmd windows and C:\ windows in the explorer, fomr the
start->Run commands.

All running on XP, SP1, with all current updates as of 5 May 03.

Current memory usage is 245MB, wit 57 processes active. This is a
ThinkPad T22 with 512MB of RAM.

After about 2 minutes, the Start->Run sequence does nothing!

I hope this helps. If you're running anything similar, please let me
know!

Have you tried and removed all these processes from the startup folder and seen
how that does? If your problem has stopped, try adding back one at a time.
