I think you may need to have WIA in order for TWAIN to work correctly?

That's intersting. My WIA is set to Manual and it never starts.
I would say you must have something installed that needs it.

WIA is called for in some scanners, and most web cams and digital cameras,
so if you have any of those hooked up, and have it disabled, that's why you
are getting error messages. If I were you, I would install SP2 and then try
other repairs.
