I am running a dual XP/W2000 partition. I am currently in
W2000 because I can't boot up my XP. Every time I do it
gives me the message:"<windows>\system32\hal.dll is
missing or corrupt. Please reinstall."
So I put in my Windows XP Installation CD and opted to use
the recovery console thinking it had a restore facility
whereby I could recreate hal.dll. Would someone help me. I
am not sure where to proceed from here.
Thanking any and all of you in advance.

Hi, Kent,
Do a repair install with the XP CD,
It will save other programs, but you will have to re-install updates.
Reboot with the Windows XP CD,
When you do the following:
To setup Windows XP now, press Enter,
Do NOT press R to enter Recovery Console,
On the Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen, Press F8,
Make sure that your current installation of WindowsXP is selected in the
box,
Then press the R key to Repair WindowsXP.
Follow instructions on the screen to complete setup.
Good Luck,
Jerry

Hi, Jerry,
Thanks for the prompt reply. However when I follow your
instructions it does NOT give me the option to Repair my
XP. Instead it says that it will preserve my files but
delete all my settings, installations and even possibly
the My Documents folder. This is NOT what I want. Is there
any other way? Please.
Thanks,
Kent

Hi, Kent,
The instructions I sent were for a Retail version of XP.
Is yours an OEM version ?
If it is, it looks like you are stuck with a clean install, and will lose
your programs.
Sorry,
Jerry
