View Full Version : SP2 killed my modem

I imagine somebody here has probably seen this before...

Had a machine with Windows XP Professional. Upgraded it to SP2 and
suddenly the PCMCIA modem shows up as "not functional". So I removed the
drivers, removed the card, reinserted it, and Windows began to search
for the drivers again. It found them, began to install them... and then
whined at me that there was "a problem" and the drivers couldn't be
installed. Modem still shows up as "not functional".

I even repeated the process and let it look on the Windows Update
website. (I notice this option has appeared since adding SP2.) Still no
dice.

It worked just fine before - I plugged it in, Windows found drivers and
configured it, and it just worked. Now I cannot seem to make it work,
and I have no idea why...

Have you checked to manufacturers website for any updated drivers.

1. I don't know who the manufacturers are. It's a simple unbranded card
with no maker's mark evident.

2. It's a standard PCMCIA modem. I plugged it in, it worked. There is a
driver disk with it - but that's only for DOS and Win98. The implication
is that WinXP is supposed to have the drivers already - and it does.
It's just that since SP2 it refuses to install them...
