the drivers seem to have mysteriously vanished after my
15 yr old was trying to burn a cd last night. The
hardware wizard tells me that windows cannot load drivers
for these devices because they are corrupt or possibly
missing (code 39) Is anyone familiar with this? Am I even
in the right place to ask this question? THANKS!

try deleting the device in system tools, device manager. When you reboot,
XP *should* find and reload the drivers. If you write down the drive
information before doing all this and it doesn't solve the problem, then go
to the manufacturer's website to download new drivers. Deleting the driver
and rebooting almost always works though.
