i have recently upgraded to windows XP from windows 98
and the performance is so slow that it seems like I
downgraded instead of upgraded. Is there anything that i
should check or do? Please Help.

Yes, there is:
1) Make sure your Motherboard BIOS is up-to-date.
2) Make sure your CPU is at least 500mHZ.
2) Make sure you have at LEAST the Microsoft-recommended amount of
memory in your computer before changing from Windows 9x to Windows XP --
More is always better. I have 512mb of memory installed, and XP uses
over 200mb just idling. So you need at least 256mb memory. With that
amount of memory or less, your HD will be thrashed continually if you
have graphics-intensive programs runnning (such as games, other
multimedia programs, e.t.c. 512mb is much better.
3) Make sure your HD controller and HD are at least ATA/66, with the
recommended cables for UDMA 4 devices. An ATA/100 controller and HD
would be better.
4) Make sure your CD-ROM is at least 24x.

Most important of all,
5)Instead of upgrading, do a "clean" install of XP, making sure you have
all XP-compatible drivers for your devices.

Do not migrate Windows 98 drivers over to your NT-based computer. Let's
face it: as Dorothy said to Toto, "We're not in Kansas anymore..."
