View Full Version : Right Click Makes Explorer Hang

When I right click a file or folder Windows XP stops
responding and does not respond until I ctrl-alt-delete
and end task on explorer.exe. The same happens when I try
to delete a file or folder through Explorer and when I
left click a file or folder and press the menu button on
my keyboard.
I found a similar problem in Microsoft's Knowledge Base
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;819101) but my problem is different. My CPU usage does
not go to 100% and the right click context menu never
appears. And unlike the mentioned problem, I encounter
the same freezing when I try to delete a file or folder
from explorer - I am able to delete files from the MS-DOS
Prompt.
I have tried two work arounds, left clicking before right
clicking and disabling transition effects, neither have
worked. I've restored my registry, ran System File Check,
Check Disk, Defrag, and everything in Norton System
Utilities. I then uninstalled Norton System Utilities.
Nothing had an effect on my problem.
My Computer Stats are as follows:
Windows XP, SP1
1.4ghz AMD Thunderbird
512 MB SDR RAM
Nvidia GeForce 4 420mx
20gb Quantum Fireball - Master (C:)
60gb Maxtor - Slave (F:)
Everything is XP compatiable, nothing is overheating, all
drivers are up-to-date, and no hardware changes were made
prior to this problem.
Thanks for any solutions or causes anyone knows.

I have the same problem and also had to go to task manager as it was
not responding. However, I have timed it and it is consistently 24 -
28 seconds delay and the right click context menu comes up. Following
this first time after a reboot, all works fine until the next restart.
I have seen 2 other postings that are similar, one that had about a
minute delay on a 1 GHz machine. Mine is an XP 1600 @1.4 GHz. It
started a few months ago and I can't pinpoint what is causing, sure
would like an answer, have tried all the fixes I and a few other
helpers have suggested. Good luck. I will watch this thread, maybe
someone has solved.
Cheers

Same here, I also have this problem.
AMD Athlon 1.25GHz
Nvidia GForce Ti4200
512Mb RAM
Maxtor 6Y080L0 hard drive.
The system was OK on a clean install, now it just seems to hang
randomly on a right mouse click. It can be on the desktop, in internet
explorer or windows explorer.
Everything is up to date latest drivers e.t.c.
This is not the same as Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 819101 but
is similar but in my case there is no 100% CPU
