Computer won't shut off

I have a problem in that it will not allow me to turn
off/reboot the computer throught the log off button
normally used for this purpose. Only way I have found to
shut off the computer is the manual switch on the main
box. If there is anything you can tell me to try to fix
this I would appreciate it as turning it off manually
could damage programs due to not saving/shutting down
programs as normal. Thank you.
