View Full Version : Windows XP Slow Search Function

Hi. Sorry to post this again, but I got no takers the
first time (perhaps it was too critical of "you know who").

The Windows XP (Home) search function is, at
best, extremely slow and cumbersome, as many people have
commented upon (I have to reboot after every time I do a
search). Are there any alternatives (esp. inexpensive
ones) that I could install so I can conduct decent
searches for files on my computer? Thanks.

The search function as you say can be slow. The time taken is dependent =
on the number of files the system needs to examine so one way to reduce =
the time taken is to reduce the population of files looked at! I assume =
you are mainly looking for user created files. If yes then organise the =
files so that they are together in a sub- folder structure headed by a =
single folder which you can search. Eliminating system files from the =
search should give a noticeable improvement.

If this suggestion does not improve the situation post again to this =
thread.

A standard question I often ask! How good is your housekeeping?

1. In Outlook Express empty your Deleted Items folder.

2. In Outlook Express run File, Folder, Compact All whilst OFFLINE.

3. Remove Temporary Internet Files by selecting Start, Control Panel, =
Internet Options, General tab, Delete Files and check box for "Delete =
all offline content".

4. Empty Recycle Bin.

5. Run Disk Defragmenter.=20

Download Adaware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ and =
use it to remove parasites.

Hope this helps.
