I'm moving large numbers of files in XP on a dual AMD
2400MP is taking an excrutiatingly long time.
Due to the way image files are generated by my software,
I end up with @ 35,000 1meg files in a directory on a
120gig, 7200rmp, recently defragged drive.
I create four subdirectories (on the same disk drive,
same partition), and move the files, 10,000 into each sub-
directory.
This takes nearly 30 minutes total! The system seems to
spend more time 'thinking' than acutally moving the
files. I've trried two methods:
1) Select files in Explorer, cut/paste to new directory
2) Command-line 'mv myfiles.0????.tga TGA00' using
cygwin bash shell
I'm pretty floored, because I've done this on LINUX and
SGI IRIX machiens with _FAR_ slower cpus, less RAM, and
slower HD (albeit SCSI), and it generally only takes a
couple of minutes to move 30-50 thousand files of similar
size.
Is there a better way in XP? I would love to know.
thanks,
jt
