Been using an HP2000C with WinXP for two years. Using driver from XP setup
because HP doesn't support this printer with XP. Found a driver tonight on HP
that said was for this model and as I have some problems with driver I'm
using I tried it. Zap...it didn't work and the Wizard can't find the driver
it found before on the system. I can't install the printer (it has been
totally uninstalled), now and let it get the driver from whereever it got it
two years ago (wasn't from the CD's because they haven't been opened); it
tells me it 'can't recognize the name of printer' and I don't have any idea
what to do about it. A printer that doesn't work quite right is better than
no printer at all...any ideas how to proceed.
Thanks.

Delete the entry of the printer under Control Panel/Printer and Faxes and
unplug the printer. Reboot the PC and plug the printer back in and XP's
"plug&play" feature should pop a balloon that new hardware was found and
ask you if you wan to install it. Click Next and just follow the prompts. XP
has a large bin of printers and may find your default drivers again and
install it.
If not, you could try the drivers for Win2k, most of the time they also work.

Have you tried the following?

Open your Printers folder and select "Add a Printer".
Click Next on the Welcome screen.
On the next page make sure that "Automatically detect my Plug and
Play printer" is unchecked. Click Next.
If the correct port is listed (should be LPT1) click Next.
On the "Install Printer Software page" select HP in the left hand
pane. You should then be able to select HP2000C in the right hand
pane.
If you are presented with the "Use exitsting driver" page, select
"Replace existing driver" and click Next.
Enter your preferences on the next two pages and then elect to
print a test page.

If that doesn't work, you might want to consider the following:

Sometimes drivers designed for Windows 2000 will work well on an
XP machine. With that in mind, you might want to go back to the
HP site and see if there's a Windows 2000 driver for your
printer. Download, install and see if it works.

As a last resort, you might want to run System Restore and check
on the calendar whether a restore point was created when you
tried to install the new printer driver. If there is you might be
able to restore your PC to the state it was in when the printer
was working. While System Restore does not delete any of your
data files, it is not without some risk. Make sure that before
using it you back up any files that you can't afford to use.

Good luck
