Since Tuesday, whenever I click Shut Down when I want to turn off Windows XP
(Home Edition) it instead restarts and reloads Windows. There's no blue
screen or anything.
Last night, it started restarting whenever I clicked Log Off as well.
I don't have Roxio Easy CD installed, and I've tried deactivating the
'Automatic Restart after System Failure' option, which hasn't solved the
problem. I've tried doing a System Restore to two days and two weeks before
the problem began, but to no avail.
I've not installed any software recently so I don't think it's that.
I've tried using a couple of programs that shut down the computer in place
of the Windows command. I think they were called WinKill and SDG Shutdown or
something. Both simply restarted the machine as per the Windows commands.
I'm hesitant to start editting BIOS or Registry settings because I'm a
novice at these things. I suspect that as Sytem Restore didn't work it might
be hardware related, rather than software, but I don't have any other ideas.
Can anyone suggest anything?
My setup:
Athlon 2600+ processor
Maxtor 120 Gb hard drive
LG DVD-R drive
Teac CD-RW
Microsoft internet keyboard
Microsoft optical mouse
Creative Soundblaster Audigy sound card
NVidia GeForce4 Ti-4200 graphic card
512MB RAM
ASUS motherboard
