I recently had a problem with 98 explorer.exe kept malfunctioning. i looked
to reinstall 98 and couldnot find the cd! so i grabbed my XP cd and
reformatted the HD on the compaq. Installation was normal so i restarted the
cpu and went to run Xp but the systen stopped responding. it hung for 5 min
before i tried to restart. i tried to get into safemode and the cpu hung @
disk pattition MUP.dll and would not start. is there anyone who can help me
with this problem?

In light of failures before the upgrade to XP, I think you need to see about any warrantee for your hardware. I doubt the machine
sold by the defunct Compaq has any guarantee that it will upgrade to XP successfully. HP bought Compaq, and I doubt they are going
to tell you anything but 'Upgrade to a new HP machine.", (aside from any extended warrantee that they could make a 98 restore)
