View Full Version : Sudden Shutdown, no errors

Windows XP Pro service pack 2 - fully updated
Tobshiba laptop model A10 SB
512 mb Ram
2.4 ghz celeron processor (x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 9 , 2394 mhz)

Installed:
Zone Alarm Pro 4.5.538.000 (installed but not used - Windows firewall is
used.)
AVG (Free) anti-virus 7.0.308

Windows contines to suddenly shut down for no apparent reason. It just turns
itself off, and I have not been able to identify any prior events to this
happening. The system, application, software, and event logs show nothing
other than a event 7023 error upon restart that shows in the system logs as
this:

Event 7023 Error
IPSEC service terminated with the following error:
the authenication is unkonwn
Source: Service Control Manager

This appears to happen on restart rather than before it shuts down, so I
don't think that it is related to the shutdown, but when I follow the help in
the windows event log, it says to open a command prompt and query, which I
do:

sc query IPSEC

results:
service_name: IPSEC
TYPE: 1 Kernal driver
State: 4 Running
(stoppable, not_pausable, ignore_shutdown)
Win32_exit_code: 0 <0x0>
Service_exit_code: 0 <0x0>
Checkpoint: 0x0
Wait_hint: 0x0

I have no idea what this means, or how it troubleshoots the event 7023 that
happens upon restart after the shutdown. It may be a totally different
situation altogether.

I recently had several spyrware programs and a couple viruses, which were
cleaned using a variety of tools, Ad-aware, Hijack this, Spybot S&D, and
several others. By all appearances and several different virus/spyware
scans, my system is clean.

This problem of shutting down began several weeks ago, before the
infections. It happened only once or twice, but now has advanced to
happening about every 2/3 hours, sometimes more frequenty.

It appears to happen on both AC and battery power, checked with 2 different
batteries fully charged. The only other possible change has been the removal
of MS virtual machine and the installation of Sun Java, but this happened
AFTER the shutdown events began to happen. As I said, there are no other
errors anywhere that I can find, so I am stumped completely as to what to
try.

I am not computer savvy, I learn as I go, and I don't understand any of
this error/event 7023 stuff .. not even to know if it is related to this
problem of shutting down.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The spyware has left a relic that is doing it. If AVG fails to find it. I would try three new MS beta for antispy.

MS Antispy software, and FAQ - Download MS anti-spyware beta :

and read the FAQ - http://www.geocities.com/marfer_mvp/FAQ_MSantispy.htm

MissCleo, did the antispyware tool fix the problem? I am having the same
problem as are a number of other people (see recent threads about sporadic
rebooting and endless boot cycle). I had just enough time to install and run
the MS antispyware tool before the system restarted again. It found and
removed some but the problem still exists for me. Please let me know what you
found out!!!

Thanks,
Wilco
