hi,
My windows XP failed to load the desktop and startbar at startup. It
only managed to show the wallpaper and a movable mouse.

I restarted my computer in safe mode and the problem persisted.

I could load the task manager and run programs. I couldn't, however,
load explorer.exe nor iexplore.exe. When I loaded explorer.exe, the
startbar only flashed very briefly at the place it was supposed to
load. The only good news was that I could cry for help here using
FireFox...

I updated the virus definitions of my Norton Anti-virus 8, but could
not get it to scan my computer. It showed an error message: "Could not
start scan. Scen engine returned error 0x20000058".

When I closed "svchost.exe" using "end process", a dialogue appeared
with a countdown timer, saying that my computer will be shut down in
about 1 minute. I opened a command window and typed the stop shutdown
command "shutdown -a", but it didn't work.

Thanks.

Regards,
Simon Chung

Now that you've updated your AV definition files have you tried to go ahead
and scan in safe mode since then? Are you still getting the error in there?
