Downloaded SP2 for XP Home on my HP machine about 3 months ago but hesitated
to install. I wish to now-how do I access - thru Windows Update, or on my
hard drive (if so, where do I look)? Thx

If you d'loaded the full version (272MB), search your drive for words from
the full title (WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU)

Hi Jim,

If you've already downloaded this package (and not via AU), search for the
installer package file named "WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe" in your hard
disk.

Or, order Windows XP Service Pack 2 on CD:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx

If you can't find it you probably shouldn't be installing it.

Ramesh,

Well I thought I had installed it but when I checked for this file I
couldn't find it. I did find a couple of files in the Windows/Software
Distribution subfolder with SP2 in the name(2 application extensions, a
system file and a security catalog file, among several others) but they were
small (1000-3000kb) and dated from August '04 when SP2 was first released.
Oddly though, when I check in Windows Update now I get a prompt to install
SP2 as a critical update, but the file size of the download is listed as 0
kb. Is this right? If I want to install should I do it within Windows
Update when I get this prompt (will Update know whether It's installed or
not and just start either installin or downloading, as the case may be)?
Thx

Jim,

To verify if SP2 is installed, type Winver in Start/Run and read the version
info. If SP2 is not installed yet, you can do so by downloading the network
installer package, or via Windows Update.

Ramesh,

Sorry, meant to say I thought I had downloaded SP2, not installed it. At
any rate, I probably will attempt to download and install this weekend from
Windows Update (I have also sent for the disc just in case). Have mirrored
my drive with Acronis True Image, and plan to install the 4 or so updates
that my PC needs from the HP website. Question: I have Norton Internet
Secuirty 2003. I presume I should disable the Antivirus before
installing-should I also disable the Norton Firewall? (I will probably
disable the Windows Firewall after install in favor of the Norton)

Any other common preloaded apps I should also disable before installing SP2?
Thx

Jim,

I'd temporarily disable all the running programs (except your anti-virus and
firewall, if you're still connected to the internet), then install the
Service Pack. For general advice on SP installation, see:
