Is it really so that sp2 requires an incredible amount of hard disk space? I
have nearly 2 GB free space on drive C: before installation, and less than
300 MB after the installation. The total size of drive C: is 9 GB. Is there
anything I can do apart from not installing the sp2?

No it's not. There's something VERY wrong there.

Here's a site with some suggestions on items that can be safely
removed after applying SP2:

Keep in mind that these are suggestion of things that can be done
once you've decided that you will not need to uninstall SP2.

When doing a fresh install, you should make sure that you have a fair amount
of free space in the system partition. Even though the minimum requirements
are reasonable, the number and size of files swells rapidly: windows
updates, system restore, temporary files, programs which by default install
into Program Files, logs, Documents and Settings, Prefetch ...

Large disk drives have become affordable!

It was a mistake to set up a C: as only 9 gig. MS suggests that free
space on c: always be a 10 gig or more. So you are WAY offline.

You really need to buy a new larger hard drive. Nine gigs isn't
big enough nowadays. And yes, XP is a space hog.
