View Full Version : Disk Cleanup Dilemma

Ok, so I thought I was being clever and I found a sight describing the
cleanmgr /sageset command. I thought I would use this to delete "hidden"
items from my hard drive. However, I found that the sageset I created
doesn't work and now some of the options that used to be under Disk Cleanup
are no longer there.

I created a new sageset by typing in cleanmgr /Sageset:1 where 1 is the
number of the set. I then chose the options I wanted to delete, pressed
"OK," a vital step, and typed in cleanmgr /Sagerun:1. This did absolutely
nothing. I know because I have a memory dump in C:\Windows that just stays
there. I even tried deleting the Temporary Internet Files through this
method, but that didn't work. I don't even care about the sageset anymore.
In fact I would like to delete it if anyone can tell me how (I searched the
HD and registry for it, but could not find it). What's more, now options
that were in my standard "Disk Cleanup" i.e. "Debug dump files," "Temporary
Remote Desktop Files," "Temporary Files," are no longer there even though I
know there are files there waiting to be cleaned up. I know I could just
delete the files, but I want to get this to work. What I really want is to
revert back to the way Disk Cleanup was before. I have tried unchecking all
the options in the sage set and rebooting the computer, I don't know what
else to do.

Go to Start > Run and type: cleanmgr /sageset , and hit enter. Select =
the
items you wish Disk Cleanup to run.

I had exactly the same problem and tried everything I could to no avail. I even
e-mailed Fred Langa who originally put the tweak on his site. He gave me the
same fix, but still nothing. After diddling with the registry and such, I got
the original cleanmgr to work.

Nicholas,

Thank you for the article, but I know how to get the sage set to run now,
what I want is the old Disk Cleanup to work.

The article states that: The n value, which is stored in the registry,
allows you to specify tasks for Disk Cleanup to run.

Anyone know what this registry entry is?

Burris, do you know what you did in the registry to fix it?

Next step, I did two separate system restores for days before I attempted
the sageset, but to no avail, the Disk Cleanup will not give me the options
for Memory Dump files or any of the other options I mentioned. There must
be a solution to this. Any suggestions are welcome.

Hi Burris,

I have no idea who Fred Langa is; I have checked out Kelly's site, but can
see any relevant information and it seems that most of her tweaks don't tell
you what they are doing in the first place. One that did tell me referred
to a registry key that I could not find (it was about hiding My Documents).

My question is: did you ever get the disk cleanup to work as it originally
did, i.e. all the options are there?

Stephen

I think I'm going to post this again stating that this question is not about
the "compress old files" problem as I think it is being passed by.

Be very careful when using Fred Langa's freeware suggestions...one of his
"Disk Cleaners" hosed my system, as well as the installs of several other
LangaList subscribers.
