Since we have installed XP SP2, the behaviour of our IE
has changed as follows when opeing Office documents:

1. Open a PowerPoint document by placing the URL in the
addrees bar of IE

2. IE pops-up dialog box that says "The file you are
downloading cannot be opened by the deafult program. It
is either corrupted or it ha an incorrect file type. As a
security precaution, it is recommended tha you cancel the
dowmload. The dialogue has <Save> an < Cancel> buttons.
If I click on <Save> and save the file on my desktop, it
opens fine.

3. Once the file has been downloaded and saved, any
subsequent attempts to open it work just fine without the
popup.

4. We configured our server not to compress files (gzip)
and the files download and open fine.

Any suggestions?

So it's not a powerpoint file you are pointing IE at it's a compressed
powerpoint file?

The server will only compress if the client (Internet
Explorer 6 in this case) will say that it accepts
compressed files.
