Just installed XP Home and prior to downloading all the
updates over the web, my root drive (hard disk) was drive
letter C: Once I rebooted, it had assigned one of my
internal 6-in-1 card readers to C: and my root (hard disk)
drive was now assigned to H:

How do I change this?

I tried going into Disk Management and moving all my card
readers around to "free" up a drive letter or whatever,
but upon reboot it is firmly a H: drive and Disk
Management won't let you change the root drive.

Help!

Thanks...Doug

You can not change the "root" drive letter designation. To do that you will
have to tank the original installation and perform a clean format/install.
Disconnect all of the extra stuff first. Only keep your actual hard drives
connected. After install you can connect all the card readers. Also, look
(read) before you press the "next" button. Understand what is happening,
where it is going to happen and what your options are.

Thanks for the condecending tone, *******.

Turns out that you are both correct and incorrect. I do
need to do, it appears, all updates and driver installs
with these USB devices disconnected/switched off, but
there was no warning about this before pressing the "next"
button.

I'm doing a full re-install and well see how it turns
out. Was able to see it as C: for just a little while
after rewinding to the previous config, but it didn't
last very long.

What a total piece of crap OS. Too bad it is so embedded.

Did not mean to be condecending.

Many people, including myself, get into the habit of just "accepting" the
default that is checked, because "we have done this a dozen times and we
know what it says"! Tell me you have never done that!

Just reminding you - is all!
