will not install windows updates.

I use windows XP home edition. I have gone to the
updates section..and click install for critical updates
and driver updates. Neither will install after repreated
attempts. For criticial updates I get the message
Q817287 re: Catalog database corruption...in red print
and will not install. Similar problem on driver
upsates. Windows/MS seems to offer no support for this
problem.

Go to C:/windows/system32 and find file catroot2 and rename it to
catrootold. Reboot, download and install. The problem is a corrupt catroot2
file. A new catroot2 file will be generated. Ironically 817287 is the up
date that prevents the corrupt catroot2 file.
