I would like to upgrade my XP Pro to SP 2 but keep a SP1 version on a new
partition (which I've created) to enable me to continue using some old (but
expensive) software. What would be the best way of achieving this?
Thanks.

setup another xp with sp2 on a different partition. The licencing issue has
been brought up on numerous occasions, please check previous posts.

What software is it that will run on SP1, but not SP2? I suppose
it's possible that there might be some, but I've never heard of
any.

Ken - the software is Avid XpressDV ver3.5 (video editing). When I say it
won't work with SP2 I'm only going by what Avid say on their website. Perhaps
I should try anyway.

OK, thanks. Sorry, I know nothing about it.

Interesting! I would have assumed they know what they're talking
about, but going to the forums on their site, I come across
messages like these:

It is clearly stated that 3.5 does not support SP2 however
I have experienced the old SP2 update problems which were very
obvious. I sold that computer set up and recently built a new
machine and SP2 was my only option for purchase. So I tried my
luck with 3.5 and have had no problems so far.
I don't say this to confuse the SP2 issue (which AVID is
clear about) but you may as well give it a try instead of letting
a perfectly good AVID system collect dust.

If you are just trying to update SP1 don't do it for some
reason the update process does not jive. The above is only if you
purcased an SP2 version of xppro.

I'm running XDV 3.5 with XP Pro + Service Pack 2 installed
and have not experienced any problems.
Am I missing something in this thread regarding SP 2?

Based on the above, I would. You shouldn't have anything to lose.
