Hi,
When I download a program, ie: Ad-Aware 6. Can I
download it right to the desktop and after installing it,
trash the original download? Kind of a new user and
would like to know best possible proceedure for
downloading programs and other fixes (not WU). Would
anyone like to share how they do it?

It is best to get into the habit of never downloading or installing
"anything" to the desktop. They are vulnerable there. The desktop should be
the domain for all your shortcuts to the files, which are stored elsewhere.

Create a folder anywhere on your hard drive. Call it "download". Direct your
downloads to this folder. Then, if a downloaded file needs to be expanded
prior to install, create another folder and call it "install". Expand the
files to this folder to do the installation. Then, clean out the folder till
the next time you need to use it.
