'My Computer' slow to open

Since I upgraded my AMD athalon 900 to xp pro from 98 and
nstalled all the updates. Everything seem to run at least
as fast or faster except when I open 'My Computer'. I get
a 'searching for items' message for about 2 minutes before
it finally opens. I've tried disabling virus software
and 'checkdiscing' the discs but to no avail. This is
driving me crazy.
Suggestions?

Could be disk indexing service building it's index; also if you have a lot
of pictures and video on your drives, it can take awhile for windows to
initially buld it's icon database for those files.
