I just purchased a new computer that is a Microsoft XP
Professional.

does this not have any software included? (Word, Excel,
etc.)

Is this an added purchase? No CD came with it

Windows XP Professional is an operating system.

MS Office and the included programs are applications. You
must buy applications as needed or desired.

When you buy a computer it is important that you read and
understand what software is included, what is optional and
what you need.

This is a very common mistake where people do not understand that office and
windows are two very different things since xp came along. Office, if it
doesnt come with your computer, is a seperate product and will need to be
purchased seperatly.

Windows XP is the operating system in which you run on your computer.

Office XP is a set of programs that come with most computers in a package
deal. It includes Frontpage, Word, office tools, Excel and Powerpoint.

Funny, I don't seem to remember this "confusion" occuring with Windows
2000 and office 2000 ;-)

And one that always puzzles me, Ray. The same question was never asked about
95 or 2000, so why is XP any more confusing? It's just as big a change,
interface-wise, as 95 was from 3.1 and yet no one ever asked "I bought a
computer with Windows 95 and it doesn't have
Word/Excel/Access/PowerPoint/etc. Why?"

Probably because you were fortunate enough, but paid for, inclusion of the
Office 2000 suite as part of the computer package deal. (See the above
replies.) I got MS Works with mine but it was inadequate after using Office
97, so I purchased and installed Office xp to be able to keep using my 97
created documents.

Before XP, computers were more geeky and the users were well
informed. Computers are now sold at WalMart and pretty
soon, probably the local grocery store. The users and the
sellers are not well informed and thus they don't even know
which questions to ask before the purchase.

If you're asking whether such software comes with Window XP, no
it doesn't. No version of Windows has ever come with any of
these, or with any application software.

If you're asking whether your computer came with any of these, we
can't answer that for you; you should ask the vendor you bought
it from.

In all probability, then, you don't have these, and need to buy
them if you want them.

With the sudden drop in computer prices, more and more technological
illiterate people are buying computers and have seen someone elses computer
with windows xp, then they want the same for their computers.

Another reason is because microsoft have just made office and windows more
'transparent' with each other. You can just about always buy another
computer and it will have office or works on it.
People have simply got into expecting it.
