View Full Version : win xp pro performance sucks

Is it my imagination or does the performance
of win xp pro have serious issues?
It seems worse than the home edition. (upgraded
from win xp home to pro version on a AMD 1.46, 1700+,
machine)
eg:
Moving the mouse cursor hogs the processor
(As per the perf meter).
Compared this to win98 running on a < 300MHz
machine which is nice and smooth and rapid
mouse movements only take < 25% processor resources
I wasted a whole day trying to fix this...
updates, virus checkers etc. I think this a
true achievement of XP (I am trying to use
Athlon 1.46GHz machine with win xp pro)
I have done all the obvious things in addition
i.e. chose optimal performance etc.
Any clues how to fix this?
To the microsoft guys reading this :
complexity kills... simple and fast is better.
Please apply Ockhams rule when designing these things

Are the proper chipset drivers installed ? Are the drives running in DMA
mode 5 or 6 ? Set unneeded services to manual or disabled ? Disable visual
effects ? Delete keys in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run ?

Did you defragment after you did this? If you didn't this could contribute
to making your machine run like a slug.
How much RAM in the machine? More is better but I'd recommend 512MB as a
comfortable minimum.
Go to Start, Run, msconfig and stop all unnecessary applications and
utilities . . . check Services as well as Startup tabs. See what difference
this makes. Running things like IM, ICQ, OSA, Real Player, etc. all the time
sucks up computer resources like you wouldn't believe!
AV software can make your machine a lot slower, I put up with it as I'd
rather have the AV protection (on an Athlon XP 1800+ with 512MB RAM), but if
you want to test to see where the problem is: Disable your network (to keep
out any problems), disable your AV and any firewall SW. Now see if
performance improves. Re-enable everything after testing so that you can do
useful work with the system.
