I have a Compaq Presario 1700 Notebook. When the computer
is turned on it goes from the Compaq screen to the boot
menu to the XP boot screen and then it starts all over
again. I was told by Compaq to run CHKDSK /R in the
Recovery Console.

I downloaded boot disks from MS website and am now in
recovery console. CHKSK does not work. The error message
states that the system cannot find autochk.exe. It asks
for the directory where the executable is located or the
drive containing the XP CD. What can I do if I don't have
the CD?

In the recovery console you run chkdsk c: /p

To see the various switches type chkdsk /? while in the recovery console.
