Does anyone know how to enable the screen saver icon in
the system tray? It used to be there automatically in 98,
I figured out how to add it for 2000, but now I am lost.

Thanks!

Lilia, I don't remember this from Win98. Maybe it was an extra program
that you installed that did this?

Sharon - I don't think it was an extra program - Perhaps I
hunted down the executable and pasted the shortcut on the
desktop that way. But I distinctly remember it was very
simple to do. With XP being organized differently, I
haven't been able to find the executable that will let me
do that. Lilia

There were a few things you could do a screensaver shortcut in Win98
that can be done in XP as well. One is to grab the shortcut for the
screensaver and stick it in your QuickLaunch tool bar.

The other is to add the screensaver to your desktop or to your start
menu. Then use the properties of that shortcut to add a keyboard
shortcut. Custom keyboard shortcuts was/is a very popular user
customization with Win9x and often used with screensavers.

Something XP will do that is different from Win98: In the screensaver
properties, check the box to require a password on resume. Use Windows
key + L to quickly lock the computer while you're away. The screensaver
pops up. When you stop it, you need to log on to get back to Windows.

I do remember the icon in Win98 that gave quick access to desktop
size/number of colors. There were tray programs that allowed you to add
icons to that area (that's why I asked if maybe you had that icon as a
result of something else you installed). Some screensavers have extra
features. A third party screensaver may offer this kind of option but I
can't think of any offhand. Sorry again that I don't remember a built in
tray icon for the screensaver.

PS: The XP screensavers are in the Windows folders and subfolders. Most
will be in the Windows\system32 folder. The default settings in XP will
hide these files. To make them visible use Folder Options> View to "show
all files" and uncheck the box to "hide system protected files."

Here is a utility which will accomplsh what you want:

http://home.mindspring.com/~tomcom/Miscellaneous/TRAY.EXE

For an example of its use create a shortcut with the following:

"C:\THE LOCATION OF THE TRAY.EXE\TRAY.EXE" c:\windows\system32\calc.exe

This will send the calculator to the system tray.

Hope this helps.
