View Full Version : In WinXP Pro SP2 Windows Installer Causing Serious Application Startup Problems

This problem occurs after most applications that I've installed or
reinstalled on this computer.

When I try to execute (start) an application that I have just installed,
(even after rebooting the computer) Windows Installer pops up, though I
can't imagine why, with a dialogue stating, "The feature you are trying to
use is on a network resource that is unavailable." This is quite strange
because the program(s) that I'm starting when this message pops up really
have nothing to do with anything on my network. Specifically, I'm having
trouble with Cakewalk Pyro 2003, which I had to reinstall recently following
the reformat of my hard disk. It always worked fine before, but now it will
not start properly after reinstallation. I have had this identical problem
when trying to install & run TaxCut 2004 and other applications as well.

The Windows Installer pop-up message goes on to state, "Click OK to try
again, or type an alternate path to a folder containing the installation
package 'ps-7-200412081453-1.60.209.428-ful.dec.msp' in the box below.

I have searched both my hard disk and the installation CD at great length,
but have never found any 'ps-7-200412081453-1.60.209.428-ful.dec.msp' on
either of them. This may or may not have something to do with the fact that
DirectX9 is installed on this computer.

I shall very greatly appreciate your help in eliminating the Windows
Installer problem from this computer.

Hi, again, L'il Roberto;

Solution no. 1 at Annoyances.org will not work here. No matter how many
times I reinstall a given application that suffers from this inexcusable
software bug, the installer still starts every time I try to execute the
installed program.

That brings rise to a question concerning Solution No. 2.

If I carry out the steps suggested in Solution No. 2, what happens when I
need to install another application later on? Will it go ahead and install
properly? Or will the installation fail to run because I have carried out
the steps suggested in Solution No. 2?

Hello, once again L'il Roberto;

I have tried to carry out the steps suggested in Option 2 at Annoyances.org
concerning this Windows Installer bug. However, when I run GPEdit.msc, no
Console Menu appears. Noir could I find any obvious way to execute
Add/Remove Snap-In. So, I gave up on that and tried running mmc.exe. That
produced an entirely different dialogue, entitled "Console 1." In the body
of a sub-window, entitled "Console Root" a single folder appears, entitled
"Console Root." However, no tree-structure appears below that one, sole
folder. And no names appear in the Name column on the right. And, nothing
happens when I double-click on the Console Root folder,

What am I doing wrong?
