Am running win xp home on a Gateway notebook. Errantly
deleted a Word document and deleted it from the recycle
bin. Am in need of a way to recover this file as it
cannot be re-created. Please offer sugestions.

You MAY be able to undelete it by means of some third-party software IF
the machine has not been used and IF the file has not been overwritten.
Do a Google search for undelete software (obviously not on the machine
in question!)

hello,
i hate to lecture you, but if you backed up your hard drive on a daily
basis, this never would have happened to you
my son says proudly, 'i never back anything up ...'
and he loses files all the time ... i got tired of telling him
about backing up the data folder to a cd-r on a daily basis
so now my response is 'oh ... that is a shame ... '
and then i laugh to myself ...
your comment that you can't reproduce the file ... i don't
believe that... if you made a mistake and printed the file
you could type it in again ... if you had backed it up you
could restore the file from a cd-r ...
why bother ...

I disagree. I have a number of Word files that can not be replaced. The
only place on earth where the information exists is in those files. If I
lose those files, I will lose all access to that information. That is why I
take backing up very seriously. Perhaps it is what makes me more
sympathetic towards people who lose their data files, and makes me less
inclined to just say that you brought it on yourselves by not backing up
your files.

To a certain extent, Stafford is right - if you DO have "irreplaceable"
files then you should jolly-well make sure that you DO back them up. The
OP certainly will have had a very steep learning-curve over this!
