SP2 machine keeps downloading KB890859

[Strike]

What is with Windows Update? It keeps telling me I need this update,
KB890859. After I download it and it installs I kepp getting the alert to
download it again. Anyone know how to fix this?

Wish I could help you, Strike. More accurately, I wish someone could help us
both. I'm having the same issue and have *temporarily* opted to disable
autoupdates because it was irritating.

Hi,

Verify that the following registry key exists after downloading, installing,
and rebooting the system:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Wind ows
XP\SP3\KB890859\Filelist

If not, then installation is being blocked, and this may be why you are
being prompted. You must have at least SP1 installed to have this update. If
it is still not working, then uninstall the update (control panel/add &
remove or the spuninst.exe file in the appropriate update backup), and
remove the above registry key. Then redownload and reinstall the update, but
get the file from this link rather than windows update:

Hi!

I've got the same problem with my Windows. I have installed the german
version of Windows XP ServicePack 2 Home Edition.
Here are the results of my analyse:

- The Problem is the version property of several files in the
c:\windows\system32 directory! e.g.: ntkrnlpa.exe
Click right, got to version and file version again. There is
standing: 5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)
Attending at the "2180"! In order of my recherches, the right version
should be: 5.1.2600.2622 (xpsp.050301-1521)
So it should be "2622"!
- Now let's take a look into the update-file which every body can
download from the Microsoft download website (this file is
similar to the update from Windows Update). It's possible to look into
such update files with help of WinZIP and WinRAR.
But what's that!? There is no other file to replace except the newer
2622 "ntkrnlpa.exe"! And the result after insatlling the
update? Nothing! No changes...

What's up there? I really don't know it!

Did exactly as you said, still have the little alert come up in the tray
saying I have
the update ready for my computer? Wonder why it can't see that it is
installed? It is in the registry where you said it should be so it is not
being blocked.

One thing I am noticing is that it is not showing up in Add & Remove
Programs but it is showing up in the
Windows directory for the backup. Is this any help?

Open Windows\System32 folder and check the Version information for these
files:

authz.dll
ntkrnlpa.exe
ntoskrnl.exe
user32.dll
win32k.sys
winsrv.dll
ntkrnlmp.exe (in Windows\system32\dllcache)

If all of the above File Version read as "5.1.2600.2622", then the KB890859
is properly installed. File Information details for this update are given
under section "Security Update Information" in this bulletin:

Additionally, see if the Windows Update log gives any additional
information. The log file names are:

"Windows Update.log" in %Windir%

Ok, I checked all those files and they all have the .2622 version accept for
the files: ntkrnlpa.exe, and
ntoskrnl.exe. They have the version "5.1.2600.2180".
In my Windows\system32\dllcache directory I don't have the file:
ntkrnlmp.exe.
I checked the log files and they state that the update was installed
successfully.
Now what should I do to get those correct files in there?

Strike,

That indicates the update was not installed successfully. Another
installation attempt from Safe Mode might help (assuming that you have
downloaded the installer WindowsXP-KB890859-x86-ENU.exe already)

I did a re-install in safe mode and it still didn't replace those two files.
They still have the .2180
version. Do you think if I delete them, they will be replaced with the
correct ones? I will put them in another directory in case something goes
wrong.

If you've done everything Ramesh has said, you could check
to see if you have *duplicates* of those files. If you do,
the problem may be that one of them is being updated, but
not the other. If you do, then *back up the older copy*, and
copy the new one over it then reboot.

Try a Verbose installation from Command Prompt.

WindowsXP-KB890859-x86-ENU.exe /verbose /log:C:\890859.txt

After installation, inspect the two log files (for any file copy issues):

C:\890859.txt
%windir%\CabBuild.log

Another option that I can think of is to extract the hotfix files using the
"/X" parameter and then copy the updated files to the System32 folder. I've
not tried it out yet, so use at your own risk. See the supported Update.exe
command-line arguments:
