Updates

I recently re-installed XP to recover from severe system
instability. The install was "clean" (to a freshly
formatted HD). I immediatly attempted to update my system
with critical updates from the MS website. Using the
automatic proceedure, i received an answer of "no updates
available at this time". i know this is not right.

Any suggestions or exlpanations?
