cannot defragment

Every time I try to defragment I get an error that
says "chkdsk is scheduled to run, please run chkdsk /f."
System is networked. I tried canceling chkdsk in
registry. I also tried disabling network and backup
drive. Still get same error. Any suggestions? Thanks!
