View Full Version : Maintenance Nuisance

We have a small network with four XP Pro machines and one old machine we use
as a print server connected to Win Server 2000 Edition. Every time anyone
boots up their machine the synchronization process starts up and we have to
wait until that finishes before starting any task. That process only takes
between 10 to 30 seconds normally.
However, sometimes the synchronization starts suddenly right in the middle
of a task for no apparent reason. This is a major irritant and I would like
to put an end to it if possible. I believe we have all the latest updates
and no conflicts. Any ideas or suggestions, please?

Start > All Programs > Accessories > Synchronize
or
Click Start, click Run, type in mob, and then click OK
Click Setup
Three tabs Logon/Logoff, Idle & Schedule
here you can change the Synchronization Manager settings and also see what
is being synchronized.
If it is important documents that are being synchronized between the
computers, it may be useful for keeping up-to-date documents available on
all of your computers, in which case you may want to use Offline files
instead and disable Synchronization Manager
Start > Help And Support, searching for 'Synchronize' or 'offline files'
will give you more info

Thanks for the information. We have been using the synchronization feature
in for some time and do almost all our work here on the desktops so we
really don't need the offline file feature
We do want all files to be synchronized at all times if possible for obvious
reasons. My only complaints are that the synchronizations are: 1.Taking
place in the middle of working with a file 2.and that XP Pro is trying to
synchronize some files/folders that for whatever reason it just can't
synchronize. Because it can't synchronize these files/folders it stops with
a message "Some errors took place during the synchronization process". I
would like it to stop after it has synchronized what it can and quit.
Hopefully, this would stop the repeating error message after every
synchronization. So, to summarize:
Is there a way to tell XP Pro to synchronize only: 1. Specific folders 2.
Only when logging off or on?
Thank you for taking the time to help.

Go into Synchronization Manager [Start > All Programs > Accessories >
Synchronize]
click on settings
click on the Logon/Logoff tab in synchronization Settings
select the applicable connection in the 'When I am using this network
connection'
To select which items you want synchronized;
check the items you want synchronized and uncheck the items you dont under
'Synchronize the following checked items:'
To only synchronize items when loging off;
uncheck 'When I log on to my computer' under Automatically synchronize the
selected items:
check 'When I log off my computer'
To stop items from being synchronizes out of the blue;
click the On Idle tab in synchronization Settings
uncheck 'Synchronize the selected items while my computer is idle'
click the Scheduled tab in synchronization Settings;
remove any scheduled task that you dont need
Just out of curiosity, does it say what the errors are when the message
"Some errors took place during the synchronization process" appears, if its
files only thing i can think of at the moment is a problem with file
permissions.

I think we're getting somewhere. To answer your question, the errors I'm
getting are all for "Offline Files". Apparently XP Pro has been set up to
copy all Server Documents.
From the "Synchronize Complete" dialogue box the message is: "Errors ocurred
while synchronizing your update". Then: (A small red circle with an X in the
middle and to the right preceedes the message(s):) Offline Files
(\\Server\Documents on Server): Unable to make _______________ available
offline on \\Server\Documents. More data is available. It does not say
what "more data" is or where to find "more data". There are about 30 of
these messages.
From this can you tell how to get XP Pro to behave the way I want it to? I
don't want it to synchronize in the middle of doing a task, and I would like
it to complete the synchronization and then disappear off the screen.

Does the computer called 'server' have a share called 'Documents'?
seems like there's a problem with accessing theses files on the share
'Documents' on the
computer called 'server'. Is the computer called 'server' the one running
Windows 2000?
Can you access these particular files by browsing to them using Explorer ie
through My Network Places?
Are these files a particulal type of file or are they just random types of
files?
there's only a couple of things I can think of at the moment
1. they are some file types that cant be synchronized, the error message are
different, but worth a look
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;252509
2. if you cant access these files by browsing to them
using Explorer ie through My Network Places, might have something to do with
file permissions settings for those particular files, do these files have
the Encrypt or Compress attribute set, or do these particular files all have
something in common
kind of at a loss at the moment with this
Just to confirm: is the error message correct "Offline Files
(\\Server\Documents on Server): Unable to make _______________ available
offline on \\Server\Documents. More data is available." is it "No more data
is available" instead of "more data is available"

Yes. "Server" is Windows 2000 Server. I can browse to those files using
Windows Explorer through My Network Places. The files are random. The error
message is "More data is available". I did uncheck the "while idle" and that
seems to help with my problem of synchronization starting suddenly in the
middle of a task.
Finally, I read the KB article from the link you provided. That may be the
answer I couldn't find and may end the problem. All the files not being
synchronized may be "by design" according to that article. I will check and
post back if the problem remains. If not, thank you very much for all your
help!
