I have a client who alleges that his new P4 2.4 GHZ with
512MB of Ram suddenly slowed to a crawl when he activated
the Operating system and Office XP over the telephone. I
can't find anything in the MS Knowledge base that
addresses this issue. Does anyone know anything about
this?
Thanks
Bill

Dear Bill,
Thank you for your posting.
According to your post, I understand that your client's computer encounter
performance problem.
If I have misunderstood your concern please don't hesitate to let me know.
1. Please ask what the exact status of your client's computer is. Did he
try to activate again? After pressing the Reboot button to force computer
to restart, will the performance problem be reproduced in random operations
other than Product Activation?
Any detailed information is appreciated.
2. If the problem occurs in any random operation now, to purify the
troubleshooting environment, I suggest perform a test under Clean Boot:
Clean Boot: This test isolates any device drivers or programs, loaded at
startup, that may cause abnormal problem like this one.
a. Click Start => Run => Type "msconfig" (without quoting marks), and then
press Enter.
b. In the System Configuration Utility window, check the "Selective
Startup" option.
c. Clear all the options below Selective Startup.
d. Click OK to close the window. Reboot the computer.
e. Try to reproduce the problem to check whether the performance problem
still remains.
Note: During the Clean Boot process, system display and Desktop will look
and perform differently compared with Normal Mode. This is only temporary.
You can click Start => Run => msconfig => Check the "Normal Startup"
option to restore the initial computer status.
The further troubleshooting steps of Clean Boot can be referred from the
