Your experience is not typical and is likely due to inadequate hardware or
software. Without information we can't tell unless you post details of your
hardware and problems you are having. If you really want to install WIN98
why not simply save your data to a sperate partion and format the
Cdrive/partion and reinstall WIN98 and your programs?

The problem may be older hardware. SCSI Scanners normally cause the greatest
problem. What are you trying to run XP on? It sounds like
your computer may not be able to handle it. Did you check minimum system
requirement and does your PC meet these. To my mind XP is far better than
Win9x keep trying

If you NEVER had any problems with Windows (* you must be in a minority
of one or two! Why have you spent so much money? There's FREE AV
programs out there that are as good as ones you pay for. Also CD Burning
progs.

My XP is the fastest loading OS I've got, and I've got W98, W2K and XP
and had Mandrake Linux 8!

Try doing a disk format and a clean install, to get rid of the rubbish.
You'll be surprised how much better a good clean XP install is. (Don't
forget to do a good backup of data first)

Did you do some research before moving up to XP?

I guess not, everything you know about 9X just forget as NT/2k/XP is a
different animal.

In my experience, I have seen nothing but problems with upgrades - something
almost always goes wrong. I always emphasize a clean install, but yes, that
would require backing up any data, and it is a lot more involved, and you
would need a win98 cd to verify that you have a qualifying product when
using an XP Upgrade CD instead of full version.

In any case, sorry that this did not go well for you. XP really is a
dependable OS - a lot more so in my opinion then 98. It's just sometimes
upgrades just don't work correctly. My mom felt the same way, but I finally
got her steered away from 98, and she really likes XP - a lot more stable
for her.

Word of advice, BEFORE moving to a new operating system, always check to be
sure your hardware and software are compatible or will need to be replaced
or updated. There was an online wizard available for download for the
purpose of checking hardware and software compatibility prior to making such
a purchase. This allowed the user to know of any issues ahead of time in
order to make an informed decision.

By the same token, the XP CD also contains the wizard. While this does
nothing to give you information before purchase since by then you would
already own the product, at the very least, running it before installing XP
would have alerted you to potential problems on your system ahead of time.
If you did an upgrade install, one of the options on the setup screen is to
"Check System Compatibility." Selecting that option runs the wizard.

That said, if you did do an upgrade over your previous operating system, if
you elected to save your old setup during XP installation, there should be
an option in Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel to Remove Windows XP.

Then, Why did you upgrade??

Anytime you get something new, yo have to expect changes. Especially
with a major change such as from Win9x's DOS kernal to XP's NT kernal.

You should have done your research to see if upgrading was right for
you..

Thelma,

Why did you upgrade in the first place? If there is no compelling
reason, then maybe you should just wipe off everything and put 98 back
on and use it.

That is a good point.

I also experienced many problems upgrading on top of 98 SE, both as an
upgrade install and as a full install. I solved the problems by reformatting
my disk and loading XP as a full install on a clean disk.

Older systems are not always upgradeable and you should have done some
research before the upgrade.
