XP HOme Ed. won't shut down

I'm running XP Home (O.E.M.) on a Sony Vaio PCV-RC14G
Desktop. "Out of the blue" windows won't shut down using
start/shutdown/turn off or ctrl/alt/delete. I've
installed service pack 1 and all updates as of yesterday.
What's up? Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Don.

Did the shutdown problem appear before, or just after, SP1 was installed? If
just after, then it is almost certain that SP1 caused the problem on your
hardware. Uninstall SP1.

You may also want to troubleshoot the problem through the Win XP Shutdown &
Restart Troubleshooter:
