View Full Version : Looping error with XP SP2 Outlook Express 6.0

I use XP SP2 with all Microsoft downloads right up to date. Everything has
worked fine until recntly when for no apparent reason a fault has developed
with Outlook Express 6.0 - a component of XP.

When I am in the home screen for OE and select the "TO" field I can see my
full Windows Address Book (Address.wab) with some 1,500 contact records. But
now, when I access the WAB direct from the home screen, either menu or
buttton access, the left hand scrolling window appears to be looping and not
loading. The right hand scrolling window is blank. This continues for up to
at least 1 hour and appears endless. To stop it and exit I have to use End
Process (CTRL-ALT-DEL).

I have tried (a) a backup version of the file Address.wab, copied into the
appropriate directory, (b) uninstall / install of Windows Component Outlook
Express and Internet Explorer, (c) reinstall of SP2, which appeared to work.
I also tried to reinstall base XP as provided on my OEM PC, but version
control will not permit this (thank goodness).

Can anyone help please? I need to maintain my WAB which I cannot do from
"To" access.

Geoff.

I would guess you're using McAfee Virus scan? An April
20/21 update caused this. They are working on it as fast
as possible, but you can fix it now.

Try this if you're up to a registry edit:

Email Client Slow
Summary:After an update to VirusScan version 9.1.06 your
email client may be
acting abnormally. Please follow these instructions to
see if it works in
your scenario.

Backup Your Registry
It doesn't hurt to be safe and make a backup. After you
open regedit from
the directions below, go to the File menu and click
export. Check the box at
the bottom that says all. Type something like Backup
into the save dialog
and click Save. You may want to save it to your desktop.

Delete the Disablepladminusone Key

Click Start
Click RUN
Type Regedit and press ENTER
Click on the + signs for each item below
+ HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
+ Software
+ Network Associates
+ TVD
+ Shared Components
+ On Access Scanner
+ McShield
Click on Configuration
Right Click Disablepladminusone and Click delete.
Press OK to the confirmation box.

Reboot Your Computer.

The full key is:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Network
Associates\TVD\Shared Components\On
Access
Scanner\McShield\Configuration\Disablepladminusone

Bruce,

Thank you for this detailed workaround. Since I wrote, two things have
happended in sequence:-

1. The looping problem has stopped, apparently by itself, although I did
request updates from McAfee and the automoted response was "All is up to date
/ none required";

2. I have looked for your proposed registry entry "disablepladminusone" and
it is not present for amendment in the location specified. So perhaps
somehow this has been updated without my being aware of it.

Anyway, today I do not have a problem so thank you for your suggestion.
Over and out.
