I had a few problems with XP so I decided to recopy it.
All went well until it came to the section where it says it is installing
windows, with 39 mins left in the set-up, runs through until it says it has
34 mins left, and then shuts down and reboots it goes into a loop, and over
and over again.
I have a legit copy of Win XP.
I don't want to reformat the drive as I have files I don't want to lose.
Hoping someone can help..

Why people think that reinstalling the operating system is the answer to
every problem is beyond me. 95% of problems are caused by the installation
of 3rd party software or drivers. Reinstalling the operating system does not
resolve these types of problems. Reinstalling WindowsXP in specific, if not
done properly, can also result in the loss of existing user profiles and
encrypted data.
Anyhow, now that you've got a mess on your hands, try first to repair the
existing installation. Boot the WinXP CD, skip the option to repair the
system and hit F8 to agree to the license screen. Start the installer, it
should detect the existing installation and offer to repair it.
Before you do this though, remove (detach) all non-essential peripherals
(basically anything besides the keyboard, monitor, and mouse). Also check
the system BIOS and disable any antivirus detection routine. You may also
want to consider removing any additional pc cards you installed.
