View Full Version : Problem with DVD Player

I run WinXP Home. I have a Lite On DVD Player which uses the PowerDVD
software.
On occasion when I insert a DVD Movie disc the light on my DVD drive will
flash for a few seconds and than nothing happens. The normal menu I get in
Windows asking me how I want to play the movie doesn't come up. When I go
to Windows Explorer, for my DVD drive it says there is no disc inserted
(even though there is). My Power DVD software also says that there is "no
disc."
Most of the time this problem goes away when I eject and reinsert the disc.
Windows will than read it just fine!
I've had this system since September 2002, and it used to not be this way,
but it has started doing this the last few weeks.
Any thoughts or ideas?

Three thoughts come to mind right off hand.
Older DVD drives do not play the new gold colored disks very well and this
is what happens.
The disk is scratched or dirty or the laser lens may be dirty and this will
also cause what you describe.
Sometimes opening and closing the drive will remedy this.
I usually take my drive apart to clean the lens as the commercial lens
cleaning disks don't remove tar and nicotine very well.
Other than that you might try to see if there is a firmware upgrade for your
DVD drive.

I have a LiteOn LTD163 (I think) drive. I can't seem to find a firmware
upgrade on the liteon site. Does anyone know of one that's been released?

You might find something here.
I never have for my Toshiba drive even though they say there is an upgrade
it is not available on the web.
Be careful.

Lite_On DVD BIOS updates are now at:
http://www.jlms.com.tw/
(The 163 and 163D drives seem to not be identical.) If you update the
drive's BIOS, it will be reported as from JLMS.
I have no idea whether a BIOS update would fix your problems, but it may be
worth a try. (I suppose that there is some risk that the drive could be
rendered unusable if the flash doesn't go right, but I've never seen that
happen myself.)
Good luck.
