I have a new computer (2 mos old). I've been having
problems with it crashing. I have Windows XP professional
for OS. I get a STOP 0x BCMSM.SYS - address F796681A base
at F7949000. I also get a DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.
The online crash analysis indicated that a device driver
caused the problem. It also claims that some anti-virus
softwared also installs drivers. The computer came from
the Manufacturer with McAfee installed. I however prefer
Norton Systemworks, so I uninstalled McAfee and installed
Norton Systemworks as per the instructions provided by
System Works. I am at a loss why this is happening and I
don't want to start messing around with stuff unless I
have a definite answer why this is happening. I suspect
the anti-virus software only because the computer seem to
work fine before the installation. The problems though did
not start immediately after the installation, so I'm not
sure it it's purely coincidental. Any help will be
appreciated.

A driver tried to access an address that is pageable (or that is
completely invalid) while the IRQL was too high. This bug check is
usually caused by drivers that have used improper addresses.

It is likely that bcmsm.sys is at fault. bcmsm.sys is not a standard
Windows file. I am not sure who wrote it, but I would uninstall the
third party application. It appears from what you wrote that Norton's
AV application is the main culprit. You could try to contact them to
see if they have a simple fix. Otherwise, I would uninstall it.

Best wishes,
