Susan,

Under Windows XP Scandisc is called "checkdisk" or
CHKDSK.exe...or sumtin like that.

it should appear under Accessories -> system tools...

just look around for check disk, and you'll find it.

Open My Computer, and right-click on the icon of the drive you want to check,
then click on the "Tools" tab. Then click on "Check now". When you do this,
it will tell you that it can't check it, since the volume is in use. It will
then offer to check the disk the next time you reboot. Just restart Windows
normally, and it will check the disk, and if it finds any errors, will offer
to fix them for you.

### NOTE ###
Any advice I give is MY opinion, formed through trial and error or
thoughtful research. There are millions of ways to do things with
computers. YOUR way may be better. But MY OPINION is still MY
OPINION. I have a right to it, just as you have a right to yours.
If I'm wrong, point out my error, then move on. I try hard not
to be wrong, but I miss it sometimes, like we all do. If you don't
like that, perhaps you should move to Nazi Germany,
where all Neo-Facists get their starts.
