I have a Dell 4400 machine, BIOS, drivers up to date.

Cleaned up 5000 infected files, spyware, etc. Found there were still some
strange behaviour, like memory errors when opening some problems.

Decided to do a repair, used XP-Home CD that came with Dell.

The initial 3 steps went OK but took about 1.5 hours to complete, including
the has not passed windows logo testing message for every driver (at least 20
times). Finally the repair got to the last 9 minutes and basically each
minute is taking 45 minutes to progress.

What would cause this ?

Either faulty hardware or bad ram most likely.

Did you check hardware? Verify...
- mobo caps and fans OK
- RAM OK (MemTest86)
- HD OK (HD vendor's tests)
....before running Windows or writing to HD - and ESPECIALLY before
"just" doing a repair install etc.

Bad RAM crashes at full speed, bad HD bogs down in sector retries.
