Everytime I try to log off a user or shut down the
computer using the xp professional, the computer acts
like nothing happened, meaning there is no hourglass
symbol. Has anyone else encountered this problem? I have
even downloaded all of the critical updates for xp and
this still has not resolved the problem.

Hi
Try going to control panel , power options , click the advance tab , and
look down at bottom of page at power buttons , should say shut down and
standby.
hope this helps.
