Hi,

When I start my PC windows Messenger always starts. Its not in the start up
menu and i've been in the Messenger preferences to uncheck the boxes for auto
start up when I open windows etc. Has anyone any ideas why it keeps opening
up? All assistance greatly appreciated.

Greetings David,

Do you have Norton Antivirus installed? Recent versions of Norton Antivirus added an
"instant messaging scanning" feature, which can conflict with Messenger and cause it to also
keep starting. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in
the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click
Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger or Windows Messenger
(depending on version of Norton) and click OK.

Hi David,

Well there's plenty of little applets around and so on that will start Messenger (I don't
think AVG is the issue though). You may have to do some investigative work of your own to
sort out which one it is.
